Singers Companye, an American chamber choir, will present a stunning concert that features mostly American sacred works by prize-winning composers. The choir is under the direction of Samuel Gordon. The program opens with two motets from Dan Forrest's five movement cycle, Words from Paradise. The ensemble will perform Holy and Halleljuah from the cycle that is based on five single words from the Bible. The first half of the program also includes Mark Kilstofte's Caritas, Ecce dedi verba me by Richard Burchard, a setting of the Lord's Prayer and an Alleluia by Alejandro Consolacion. Part II begins with Carlyle Sharpe's fabulous Laudate nomen for choir and organ featuring Robert Mollard, organist. The program continues with Paul Christiansen's moving, My Song in the Night, based on an American southern folk hymn from which the program takes its title. Works by Antonio Estevez, Rene Clausen, and Craig Hella Johnson end the program.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer describes the ensemble in this way "...they comprise a highly disciplined, cohesive ensemble that is responsive to words and expressive subtleties. Gordon has established warm blends, true pitch and smoothness of vocal motion."
Cleveland Classical praised the ensemble as “...unified, controlled and well-balanced exhibiting a stunning range of vocal colors….a pleasure to hear a vocal ensemble that seems concerned with the mastery of quality of sound.”
The critic of the Washington Post described their concert at the National Gallery of Art in Washington with these words, "....the singers made the place feel like an intimate cathedral, with singing of unfailingly beautiful tone and complete charm."
