The Roswell United Methodist Sanctuary Choir provides music weekly for Roswell United Methodist Church's Sunday Traditional Worship service, and presents several major concerts each year as a part of Roswell UMC's Sounds of the Spirit Concert Series. With an active membership of 115 voices, the Choir provides an opportunity for volunteer musicians to express and develop their faith through music. The Choir is composed of adults of all ages, and rehearses weekly mid-August through June each year. Since its inception in 1989, The Michael O'Neal Singers organization has established itself as one of the premier symphonic choruses in the Southeastern United States. In addition to the 2018 Ireland tour, the Festival Chorus has sung in Spain in 2014, and Austria in 2016.
The Guinness Choir was established in 1951 by Victor Leeson, who conducted the Choir from its foundation until 1984. He was truly inspirational in its growth and direction and early performances included the great oratorios of Bach and Handel, many of which were performed in Dublin for the first time.
On Victor Leeson’s retirement in 1984, John Dexter was appointed as Musical Director. The Choir gave many notable performances under his direction, including the Irish premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, and Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast.
David Milne has been the Guinness Choir’s Musical Director since 1991. With his inspirational direction, it has continued to give many important concerts including in November 2007, a very successful performance of the Verdi Requiem at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, in conjunction with the Belfast Philharmonic Choir and the Ulster Orchestra.
More recent highlights include: 2015: A rare performance of The Apostles, one of Elgar’s great masterpieces, 2016: Performances of Handel’s Messiah in the magnificent St. Mel’s Cathedral, Longford and in St. Brendan’s Church, Birr. A highlight of 2016 was the Choir’s participation on Easter Sunday in a choir of 1000 voices with the RTE Symphony Orchestra in the RTE 1916 Commemoration concert of of ‘A Nation’s Voice’ by Shaun Davey. Our main concert in 2017 was Haydn’s ‘The Seasons’ and we finished the year with our Christmas concert in St. Patrick’s Cathedral with Eleanor McEvoy as our Special Guest. The Choir’s most recent concert was a performance of Bach’s Mass in B Minor at the National Concert Hall. Choir members are very much looking forward to participating in tonight’s concert.
